BIOGRAPHY
Melvin H. Miles
received his two year college degree from
Dixie College in St. George, Utah, where he
was valedictorian of his class. After
serving two years as a missionary in Germany
for his church, he continued his education
at Brigham Young University where he
received the BA degree with a major in
chemistry and a minor in mathematics. He
then continued graduate school at the
University of Utah where he received the
Ph.D. with a major in physical chemistry and
a minor in physics. Following this he was a
NATO
post-doctral fellow at the Technical
University in Munich, Germany (1965-66). He
was then a research chemist for the Navy at
the Corona, California laboratory (NOLC). He
left this position in 1969 to teach at
Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). He
was there for nine years where he was an
assistant and then associate professor with
tenure. During this time he spent summers
doing research at either Brookhaven National
Laboratory in Long Island, N.Y., or at the
Naval Weapons Center in China Lake,
California. He accepted a permanent position
at China Lake in 1978 and has been there
since that time. He has over 200 research
publications in various areas. He received
the NAWCWP Fellow Award for his research in
China Lake along with the McLean Award and
the Sigma Xi Award for his scientific
publications. He was engaged in cold fusion
work in China Lake from 1989 until 1995. He
worked in Japan for five months at the NHE
Laboratory in 1997-98 as a NEDO Guest
Research Scientist. Dr. Miles retired as a
research scientist from the U.S. Navy in
January of 2002. He began teaching at
various universities as a visiting
professor. Since he retired, he has taught
at Middle Tennessee State University, Bates
College, and currently at the University of
LaVerne.
